Storytelling Workshop

In 2022 Emily won the Leiden University Teacher of the Year Award which came with a 5 year funded education project.

The global narrative surrounding African biodiversity is often told through western voices and perspectives. After teaming up with colleagues from East Africa an intensive storytelling workshop was created, and Tanzanian conservation practitioners were invited to attend and develop core skills that mean they can transform their research into powerful and clear stories, told in their own voices. These stories (told using digital StoryMaps) can then be used for important science communication within Tanzania but also abroad. The materials are now used to develop authentic teaching materials for students at Leiden University, giving students direct access to African perspectives regarding African conservation.
